Nonviolence in action since 1981

A Note from the Executive Director

After almost six years serving on FNVW's staff, I've discerned that I am ready for the next chapter of my career. I let the FNVW Board know at our Board meeting on May 20th that I was preparing to step down from my role as Executive Director. I've since given them my notice and my last day at FNVW will be August 9th.

I share this information with you with much care and gratitude for all we've accomplished and with much heartfelt reflection on all we've experienced together - the pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, the Uprising, January 6th, reimagining our programs for a virtual space, Whatcha Wednesday Zoom events, so many People Camp memories, being named the number one Nonviolence Podcast, securing an incredible AVP youth program contract with Hennepin County, George Lakey's book tour, the Walk for Peace and Justice, getting a Badass Award from the MN Women's Press, creating a new customized database that can run the reports we need, organizing/cleaning up/consolidating all our files and financial records, developing one integrated cloud platform for our work... the list goes on and on!

My passion for our mission and the work FNVW does remains as strong as ever. As does my love and respect for each of you. I strongly believe that FNVW has an important and unique role to play in our community and I am excited to pass the baton to the next Executive Director who will bring new energy and talent to FNVW. No matter where I land next, I will continue to connect people to FNVW, and FNVW to people.

The Board has hired Joan Hyman as FNVW's Interim Executive Director. Joan recently served as FNVW's Community Engagement Specialist and she is excited to take on this new role at FNVW!

There will likely be a need for volunteers to step into temporary leadership roles to support the organization during this transitional time. Please consider ways you might lean in to FNVW to hold the organization steady.

I will miss working with each of you, but I have a feeling our paths will keep crossing as we continue to work for peace and justice in our world together.

With Revolutionary Love,
Leah

Alternatives to Violence Project in the Community

Our incredible Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshop facilitators led two AVP Workshops and a series of AVP mini-sessions in July!

FNVW graduated five new AVP Facilitators at our Training for Facilitators workshop last month, including two new youth workshop facilitators!

Mt. Olivet Retreat Center donated room and board for an Intergenerational Basic Workshop in July! We partnered with Messiah Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and offered an overnight AVP workshop retreat for members of their congregation.

This past week, FNVW partnered with GMCC's summer program to offer AVP mini session to 41 youth in grades 1-8. AVP mini sessions helped youth develop skills like empathy, communication and being a good friend. Facilitators got creative and invited the younger students to use beanie babies for role play scenarios, as seen in the photo above.
