Meet Our New Community Engaged Learning Students!

Part Two

Each semester, Friends for a NonViolent World (FNVW) partners with colleges and universities
to engage students in our nonviolent social change work. Community Engaged Learning Students
at FNVW develop skills in community engagement, advocacy, and organizing. In turn, these students bring passion, energy and insights into FNVW's work.

My name is Naomi Gedey and I am a senior at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. I am studying Sociology of Law, Criminology and Justice with an Applied Business Certification. I am currently a Treasurer for African Student Association and a Community Advisor over at Middlebrook Hall. All my life I’ve been a leader to my community and peers. I advocate for justice whenever I notice anything feeling unjust. My initial goal when I get older is to help people like me and who are experiencing any discrimination in any environment. I just want to make a change in the world one day.

Hello there! My name is Iman Shukri, I am a senior at the University of Minnesota. My degree is the Sociology of Law, Criminology, and Justice, with a minor in Creative Writing. I am also a licensed real estate agent. I enjoy reading and I am currently working on a novel with a close friend of mine. I am interested in criminology as a field of work and want to absorb as much as I can. In 2020 at the very start of the pandemic, I was the victim of a violent crime and have become thoroughly engaged by different crime initiatives and have been waiting for an opportunity to get involved. I hope to learn more about restorative justice and what that means for myself here at Friends for a NonViolent World!

My name is Bianca Corral. I am an undergraduate social work junior in St. Catherine University. I plan on getting my Masters at the University of Minnesota to work independently with military soldier members in the mental health field. I am pursuing social work to advocate for local issues and represent communities in Minnesota. I have a passion for seeking challenges that can help me grow to become better in my work. I love to do research to help understand the world around me. I chose to volunteer at FNVW to learn about their mission and to seek experience and skills in my profession.
