| Note from Executive Director Labor Day 2022 | | | |
Happy Labor Day FNVW Community! This weekend the United States honors and recognizes the American labor movement and the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. The rich history of the American labor movement is filled with stories of nonviolent direct action campaigns that resulted in better wages, reasonable hours and safer working conditions. But organizing to protect the common interest of workers is not just a thing of the past. | | | | | | As I ponder the meaning of Labor Day 2022 I am considering the ways the economic, social and political upheaval of recent years - coupled with the Covid-19 pandemic - is altering the workplace, worker's relationships to our jobs, and what workers are willing to fight for. I am also thinking about how the United States' unique version of capitalistic individualism tells workers that our jobs are both necessary for meeting our basic needs (food, shelter and health care) and should also be personally fulfilling. Is our model of work realistic and sustainable? What are workers organizing for in this moment?

| Welcome FNVW's New Student Intern, Zetta Thurow | | Each year, FNVW's internship program provides hands on learning for students in the Twin Cities. Our interns contribute tremendous passion, energy and insights that move FNVW's mission forward. In turn, they develop skills in community engagement and learn nonviolent strategies for social change. Read on to learn more about Zetta Thurow who will be interning at FNVW this academic year! | | | | | | | |
Zetta Thurow graduated from Rochester Mayo High School in 2019. She is currently a Senior at St.Catherine University and is majoring in Social Work with a minor in Psychology. She interned at Folwell Elementary School, working with the after school program in the Spring of 2022. She is interested in working with elementary aged children who are showing early signs of mental illness or having behavioral issues. She feels strongly that when we intervene early and help them cope and manage their mental illness, trauma, or behavior issues then they will have better outcomes in their teenage and adult lives. Zetta is very passionate about playing soccer and coaching. She has been playing soccer since she was 3 and is currently on the soccer team at St. Catherine University. | | | | Zetta Thurow, FNVW's new social work intern

Open Streets Minneapolis events temporarily close major thoroughfares to car traffic, opening them to people biking, walking, rolling, and connecting with neighbors and local businesses. Congested city streets become vibrant, pedestrian-friendly boulevards where people can dream, play, and explore. At each Open Streets Minneapolis event, local businesses, artists, and community groups transform their streets, showcasing the diversity, creativity, and culture of Minneapolis. Help FNVW be a part of the action! Email donna@fnvw.org to sign up for a tabling shift.
